How will my story be captured?
The young people involved in this project will be video-recorded during the process of writing their Transformational Tale. A recording will also be made of them sharing the final version of their story.
To amplify the voices of non-speaking young people with complex needs, we would like to share these videos widely. This will also help highlight the importance of teaching literacy and communication skills to all.
Where will the videos be shared?
The Teach Us Too and BackPocketTeacher websites and through other aspects of their work related to young people with complex needs. We are also eager to obtain support and publicity for Transformational Tales from local, national, and international news/media outlets.
Can my young person be involved without their videos being shared?
Yes, your young person can be involved without their name or any image of themselves being shared. In this circumstance, Sarah Helton will transcribe the process of the young person writing and the final version of their Transformational Tale. This will then be presented as a written account and retold by a member of the project team (this retelling of the young person’s story will be video recorded). The original video recordings will then be deleted.
How will my data be stored?
All information collected about you and your young person during the project will be stored safely and securely on an external data drive. This drive will be kept in a locked cabinet.
What will be the next steps for the project?
We hope to conduct a qualitative study using the Transformational Tales gathered from this project. You will be asked on the consent form if you agree to your young person'’s story being included in this future research.
Can I be involved in the project but not in any future research?
Yes, if you only wish to be involved in this initial project that is absolutely fine.
Do I have to take part in the project?
No, participation in this project is voluntary. There is no obligation for you to take part. You have been given details of this project because you have a child/young person aged 7 to 25 who has complex needs and is non-speaking.
What if I say ‘yes’ and then change my mind?
If you would like to withdraw from the project you can do so at any time without having to give a reason. All of yours and your young person’s, data and video recordings will be permanently deleted.
